Flags Over Normandy
Our Work
Flags Over Normandy carries out its mission through four interconnected areas of dedicated service — each one an expression of our commitment to ensuring that the sacrifice of Allied military personnel is honored in perpetuity.
01
Flag Donations
The heart of our mission — placing American and French flags at military memorials across Normandy.
The donation of flags is the most visible expression of our mission. We procure American and French flags of the highest quality and work directly with memorial administrators, local French municipalities, and veterans' associations to ensure they are properly installed, displayed, and maintained at each site we serve.
Flags at outdoor memorial sites are subject to the elements — wind, rain, and sun take their toll. We monitor the condition of flags at our supported memorials and coordinate timely replacements so that the colors always fly with dignity.
On significant commemorative dates — including the June 6 D-Day anniversary, Veterans Day, and French national holidays — we coordinate the donation of ceremonial flags for use in formal observances at Normandy memorials.
02
Historical Research
Understanding who served and what they sacrificed — so that our honors are grounded in truth.
We believe that meaningful remembrance requires historical knowledge. Our research work focuses on the specific units, individuals, and actions commemorated at each memorial we serve — building a documented record that informs our flag donations and our public communications.
We collaborate with military historians, archivists, and academic institutions on both sides of the Atlantic to deepen our understanding of the Normandy campaign and the men and women who fought it. This research informs the historical context we provide at each memorial site.
We also support the identification and documentation of lesser-known memorials and markers across Normandy — sites that may lack the visibility of the major cemeteries but are no less important to the communities and families they serve.
03
Memorial Preservation Awareness
Raising awareness of the preservation needs of Normandy's military memorials for future generations.
The memorials of Normandy are irreplaceable. They are not merely monuments — they are the physical record of one of history's most consequential events, and they require active stewardship to endure. We work to raise awareness of the preservation challenges facing these sites.
We partner with local French authorities, international preservation organizations, and the American Battle Monuments Commission to identify memorials in need of attention and to amplify the voices of those working to protect them.
Through our communications and outreach, we seek to build a broader public understanding of why these sites matter — not just to veterans and their families, but to all who value the history of freedom and the cost at which it was purchased.
04
Franco-American Collaboration
Tending the bond forged in 1944 between France and America — because remembrance crosses borders.
The liberation of Normandy was not an American story alone — it was a story of alliance, of shared sacrifice, and of a friendship between nations that was sealed in blood on the beaches of France. We take that partnership seriously in everything we do.
We maintain active relationships with French municipal governments, local historical societies, veterans' associations, and community organizations in Normandy. These partnerships are essential to our work — they ensure that our flag donations are welcomed, properly placed, and understood in their full historical context.
We also support cultural and educational exchanges that deepen Franco-American understanding of the shared history of the Normandy campaign — because the best memorial to those who fell is a living relationship between the nations they served.
“Every flag we donate is a promise kept — to those who raised the colors on the beaches, and to the French people who welcomed them as liberators.”
